We've all been there, the next morning feeling of "why do I feel not aliiiiive?" A crazy night out can definitely take a toll on your pretty body. So what breaksdown the alcohol in our bodies? Alcohol Dehydrogenase The enzyme is contained in the lining of the stomach and in the liver. It catalyzes the oxidation of ethanol to acetaldehyde (this is popularly known as the chemical that causes hangovers): CH3CH2OH + NAD+ → CH3CHO + NADH + H+
Here's what to do to help getting you feeling better:
1. Hydrate Drink sports beverages like gatorade, powerade. Vitamin Water Revive - Fruit Punch - (Vitamin B + Potassium) is really good. Also remember to hydrate your skin and lips, apply face and body lotion regularly.
2. Vitamins The Vitamins we lose the most from drinking are Vitamins B and C, this means lots of OJ, lemon juice/lemonade, fruits, tomato soup
3. Proteins Sliced roast beef (fall in love with the Bristol Farms london broil) and eggs, yogurt, or cottage cheese. Avoid sugary alternatives like donuts or sweet rolls as these again merely delay the “sugar crash.” Protein, conversely, helps the body restore a healthy blood sugar level. Low blood sugar, in addition to the poisoning effects of alcohol, is one of the main reasons for nausea due to a hangover
4. Sleep Enough said
5. Shower To wash off the evaporating alcohol from your skin and a nice pressured hot shower helps any headache and shoulder/ neck pains due to a hangover
6. Ibuprofen Found in Advil or Motrin is a better alternative to acetaminophen found in Tylenol due to the harm already done to your suffering liver. Some actually say if they took a dose before going to bed right after partying, it helps them sleep better and wake up feeling less of the usual hangover effects.
Greasy food is good for coating the stomache before drinking, not for after. It's especially not good to eat that bacon wrapped hotdog for $3.99 off of Sunset after hitting the clubs because you are not just buying drunken satisfaction, you are also buying extra pounds right before bed.
Some suggest to drink a beer or a bloody mary to make you feel better since your body is going through alcohol withdrawl. However, by doing so, you are really just delaying the effects of hangover, you are actually prolonging the whole process and will still feel icky later.
