Every S&P girl knows that surviving flu season without coming down with a raucous cough or a runny nose is quite the challenge. Avoiding illness is virtually impossible when those around you start showing symptoms of sickness, so it's a good idea to be prepared before your bed-ridden roommates starts asking you to pick up her Nyquil. Read on for the smartest tips to keeping you healthy and happy throughout flu season.
1. GET YOUR SHOTS With flu shots available at your local Ralphs, Target or Walmart, there should be no difficulty in finding a business near you that offers the seasonal flu vaccine. The months that you should seriously consider getting your shot are September or October, at the beginning of the flu season. It's relatively inexpensive and known to be very effective. However, the CDC does recommend that most people get a new shot every year for best results, so make sure you don't forget to schedule one in! 2. AIRBORNE VS. EMERGEN-C People have been debating the effectiveness of Airbone vs. Emergen-C for ages...okay, not really, but it's still a legitimate question! Although, my research on the matter did not yield any conclusive results, I did learn one hard and cold fact: everyone seems to be looking for a quick fix to support their immune system! Although there are no quick fixes when it comes to your health, there are a few supplements that (if taken regularly) can help to assist your immune system in fighting off illness. One of these is, obviously, vitamin C which you can obtain in supplement form or through the food you eat. Some of the best natural sources of vitamin C are raw bell peppers, broccoli, oranges, and papaya. Taking zinc is also a great supplement to add into your morning routine throughout flu season, and especially if you feel you are coming down with a cold. Zinc is found in many throat lozenges, so it isn't a bad idea to eat some zinc-hearty foods if you start to get a scratchy throat. Some of the best natural sources of zinc are oysters, crab, beef and fortified breakfast cereals (check the labels!). 3. HOME REMEDIES What if you don't have time to stock up on supplements and suddenly find yourself sick? Luckily, there are some great home remedies for symptoms associated with the flu and the common cold. One of the best secrets to feeling better is getting enough sleep! It's easy to get into a routine that keeps you busy, but don't forget to take a day off and be sure to aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night. According to the Mayo clinic, it boosts your immune system! Web-MD also suggests increasing the amount of liquids you consume to at least 8 cups, and taking a hot shower. The steam can help break up mucus in your sinuses. 4. ACCESSORIZE You heard me. Stock up on essential flu accessories! This includes: -Antibacterial gel: Because you never know when the girl in the next cubicle is going to call in sick. You probably touch the same coffee pot and elevator buttons. It doesn't hurt to keep this stuff around the office! -Lysol cleaning wipes: These handy wipes kill the flu virus, and they're great for sanitizing common areas in your home when roommates, boyfriends or family members start to come down with an illness. Use them on door knobs, bathroom sinks, and remote controls! -Travel sized tissues: If you do happen to start feeling sick, you won't regret picking up a travel sized packet of tissues. They're compact and purse-sized! Good luck, and stay well!
